IFIP 8.6 2007 is including a Doctoral Consortium in the programme to encourage PhD students who are studying the diffusion of IT and related topics to meet and discuss their research in a relaxed environment under the guidance of leading IS academics.
The Consortium will take place at the University of Salford on 12th-13th June 2007. On 12th June selected students from the University of Salford’s Informatics Research Institute (IRIS) will be presenting their work and there will be a series of informal research seminars. On the evening of the 12th IRIS will host a reception for all PhD students who are attending the IFIP Doctoral Consortium. On 13th June the IFIP 8.6 Doctoral Consortium will take place and will be dedicated to issues concerning the social and technical Diffusion of IT.
The Doctoral Consortium Chair is Professor Bob Galliers. Appointed as Provost of Bentley College, USA in 2002, Bob Galliers was previously Professor of Information Systems and Research Director in the Department of Information Systems at the London School of Economics, UK. He retains his connection with the LSE as a Visiting Professor. Before joining LSE, he served as Lucas Professor of Business Management Systems and Dean of Warwick Business School, UK, and earlier as Foundation Professor and Head of the School of Information Systems at Curtin University in Australia. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and a fellow of the British Computer Society (FBCS), the Association for Information Systems (FAIS) and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). He has served as President of the Association for Information Systems and as co-chair of the 2002 International Conference on Information Systems. He has published widely in many of the leading international journals in Information Systems and has also co-authored a number of books, the most recent being: Exploring Information Systems Research Approaches (Routledge, 2006), the third edition of the best seller, Strategic Information Management (Butterworth-Heinemann, 2003), Rethinking Management Information Systems (Oxford University Press, 1999), and IT and Organizational Transformation (Wiley, 1998).
The Consortium is limited to 20 students who will be mentored by Prof Bob Galliers and Prof Sue Newell of Bentley College, USA and Prof Karlheinz Kautz, Department of Informatics, Copenhagen Business School.
In order to attend the Consortium students should prepare a 3,000 word research proposal of their work. Their proposals must be submitted with a letter of recommendation confirming that their home institution will be prepared to cover their attendance costs should they be selected to attend the Consortium.
The selection criteria for the consortium are quality of the proposal and relevance of the research to the field of IS. Students will be provided with reviews of their proposals and a set of seminars on IS research issues and the future direction of the IS discipline.
Students are expected to cover travel costs to the Consortium. Cost of attendance at the consortium is £75. Students wishing to attend the main IFIP conference are eligible for the reduced student rate of £175 if you register before 1st June 2007.
